The Rose Tavern was in Worrall Road, on the corner of Sutherland Place, thought to be pictured here in the 1950s, the bunting was probably to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rose Tavern was converted into a private dwelling place around 1958 and is still standing. This picture was kindly sent in by Richard Potter of Clifton Bristol. Ivor Whitfield’s tenancy commenced on the 11th June 1934 and the rent was £60 per annum, this was reduced to £50 on the 29th September 1937. The landlord was The Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Limited.

Whereas a petition of GEORGE WILLEY, at present and from the 13th day of March last past, residing at No.21, Anglesea Place, Durdham Down, in the parish of Clifton, in the city & county of Bristol, Milk Seller; previously residing at and keeping the Rose Tavern, Caroline Place, Durdham Down aforesaid, general shopkeeper, licensed to sell beer, cider, tobacco, snuff, tea, coffee, and pepper, keeping cows, and selling milk, also being servant to a lady, and renting land at Westbury, in the county of Gloucester; previously residing at No.1, Southerland Terrace, Durdham Down aforesaid, General shopkeeper; previously at Shortgrove estate, Durdham Down aforesaid, general shopkeeper, keeping cows, selling milk, and servant to a lady, an insolvent debtor, having been filed in the county court of Gloucestershire, at Bristol, and an interim order for protection from process having been given to the said George Willey under the provision of the statutes in that case made and provided, the said George Willey is hereby required to appear in court before the judge of the said county court of Gloucestershire, at Bristol, on the thirtieth day of June next, at eleven o’clock in the forenoon precisely, at the Guildhall, in the said city of Bristol, for the first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be further dealt with according to the provisions of the said statutes; and notice is hereby given that the choice of assignees is to take place at the time so appointed. All persons indebted to the said George Willey, or who have any of his effects, are not to pay or deliver the same but to Edward Harley esq., one of the clerks of the court, at his office, No.30 Broad Street, Bristol.
