Don Cossack Redcliff Street

The pub was named after the Don Cossacks who originated from the lower courses of the river Don in Russia, the name was adopted by many English pubs when these Russian cavalrymen caused Napolean to retreat from Moscow in 1812; however, most of these pubs were re-named when the Crimean war began and British soldiers found themselves fighting against the Cossacks.

Cornubia Temple Street
The Cornubia (which is a Latin name for Cornwall) was possibly named after the S.S. Cornubia, a paddle steamer which plyed its trade between Hayle and Bristol in the late 1850s, a pub in Hayle bears the same name.

Cherry Tree Rose Street

This area was built on what used to be the orchard of the Great Gardens next to Temple Church, there was also a pub in Rose Street named the Apple Tree. The Cherry Tree is pictured here in the late 1980s awaiting demolition.

The pub is not listed in directories between 1854 and 1862. In the 1861 census, Mary Poor, widow of William Poor, is listed at the Cherry Tree, her occupation is given as ‘formerly beer retailer’. The tenancy of Sidney Price commenced on June 21st 1937, the rent at this time was £40 per annum and the landlord was the Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Limited.

Bute Arms Victoria Street

In 1844 the shop at No. 140 Thomas Street was occupied by Lea & Merrick, glass merchants, by 1853 it had become a commercial eating house, and in 1865 the business was listed as a commercial and family boarding house and refreshment rooms.
From 1870 when work began on the building of Victoria Street it was known as the Victoria Hotel (ale & porter stores). Known as the Bute Arms from 1877, the pub was bombed in the war and in 1961 the site was cleared for the new E, S & A. Robinson building which is still standing on the corner of Redcliff Street.
