Griffin Colston Street

The Griffin stood at the bottom of Griffin Lane (Lower Park Row) and was demolished when Colston Street was built in the early 1870s. Richard Bustin later had the pub rebuilt on the corner of Colston Street and Trenchard Street.

Greyhound Hotel Broadmead

The Greyhound was a large coaching inn dating from 1620, originally two buildings the Birmingham Hotel (previously the Bell) and the smaller Greyhound, these merged to form one hotel named the Greyhound in the early 19th century. In 1958 a large part of the pub was converted into shops and the whole front re-built in replica. Today it serves as an entrance to the Galleries shopping centre and is no longer a pub.

Grapes Hotel Exchange Avenue

Below are two postcards showing the interior of ‘Ye Grotto’ at the Grapes Hotel in Exchange Avenue, I think Gracie Fields would have approved of the decor. At one time known as the West India Coffee House the Grapes Hotel was lost in the 1941 blitz. The card showing H. G. Watjen as proprietor was posted in March 1916.

Garrick’s Head Broad Quay

No. 62 Broad Quay (No. 22 from around 1904). Previously the St.Patrick’s Tavern, the Garrick’s Head was rebuilt in 1890 and was demolished in 1978 to make way for an extension to the Bristol & West building. The architect of the Garrick’s Head was Edward Gabriel who also designed the Cambridge Arms in Redland and the Pilgrim, Brislington.
