Part of an email from Dave Knowles … “I recall that there was a pub in wellington park, (off Blackboy Hill), called the wellington, I think it closed in the fifties, and consisted of a single front bar, there was a well known (and smelly) fishmongers virtually next door called Lloyds”.

The following information was provided by John Gardner .…
My mother, Ada Griffiths, was the joint landlord of the Wellington Arms with her brother Bill before the war. After the war her brother became landlord of the Rising Sun down on the Feeder, another lost pub. My mother married my father, Arthur, in order to keep the licence as women were not allowed to hold licences for pubs back then. I was born in the Wellington Arms in 1949 and lived there with my Mother and Father until 1958 when Courage’s Brewery bought out Georges’ Brewery and closed the pub. It is now a private house with no sign of it ever having been a pub. We moved to the Sugar Loaf on St Mark’s Road in Eastville which my parents ran until 1965. That pub is still going strong.

On the 21st December 1888 the Retreat was taken on a 14 year lease at a rent of £80 per annum by James Lockley, brewer of Lewin’s Mead. The lease was one of 22 sold by James Lockley to Bristol United Breweries Limited on the 25th March 1892 for the total sum of £11,000.

Dave Knowles remembers … “the Retreat was a cider house, so no spirits, but you could buy draught port or sherry. The old boys would have a pint of rough and then top it up with a large port!! The Gents consisted of a long black wall (so beloved by Jethro in one of his jokes). Most of the old boys suffered the shakes until they had at least two pints of the “red biddy” as it was known”.
