Near the corner with Old King Street, the Armada, previously known as the Ship was pulled down during the 1950s redevelopment of the area.

The tenancy of Stanley Forse commenced on the 21st October 1949, the rent was £40 per annum and the landlord was The Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Limited. Thomas Richards also traded as a gun maker at No. 2 St.Thomas Street.

About 30 years ago I acquired an old photo album from my great-aunt’s house in east Texas. In the album were many letters written in the late 1890s from a Mrs. William Puddy of the Hotel Armada in Bristol, to her good friend Fannie Bliss in Pennsylvania. I used to spend hours wondering about what the Hotel Armada was. Today my daughter found the old album and looked through the letters. I checked the internet to see if I could find anything and discovered your website. I was sorry to discover that the Hotel Armada, American Bar, Broadmead, Bristol (that’s the printed return address on the envelopes), was torn down in the 1950s. But it was nice to see it on your website and William Puddy listed as proprietor.
