White Lion (St. James’s Churchyard)

White Lion St.James’s Churchyard
One of three pubs pulled down to allow for the building of Lewis’s Department store in the 1950s. The Rose & Crown was rebuilt around 1880 and renamed the White Lion around 1891, possibly by Jesse Whiting who had previously been at the White Lion across the road in Bridewell Street.

On the corner with Ellbroad Street the old inn dating from 1606 was re-built in 1906, and then demolished in 1954 to be replaced by shops which were removed in 1970 to make way for the Holiday Inn. One of the posters on the wall of the pub is advertising rugby matches to be played over the Easter holiday, they are Bristol versus Lennox, Clifton, Pontypridd and Leicester, a smaller poster advertises Southern League soccer games, Bristol Rovers versus Reading, Fulham and Portsmouth.

This picture shows the Prince Rupert around 1895, the pub was re-built not long after. Rupert Street was named to commemorate Prince Rupert; who in July 1643 during the civil war, captured Bristol for the Crown, only to surrender it back to Lord Fairfax and the parliamentarians, in September 1645.

This photograph was kindly provided by Mike Slucutt. Mike’s wife Margaret (nee Skuse) is the Great Granddaughter of Octavius and Sarah (nee Gazzard) Counsell. This is thought to be Octavius and Sarah stood outside the newly built Prince Rupert, circa 1896. The new pub survived until August 1932 when it was demolished to make way for road widening and the building of Electricity House.

The following information was kindly provided by Shirley Dawson:
“My grandmother Grace Victoria Shepherd was the last Licensee of the Prince Albert. She took over the pub after my Grandfather’s death (Reginald Shepherd). At the time of the compulsory purchase by Bristol City Council the pub had been run by different family members for around fifty five years. It was a sad day for the family.
As a matter of interest the pub’s address changed from Beddington, Bellington, Bendon Lane also Lime Kiln lane and St.George’s Road in Census records 1841 – 1911. In the 1851 Census Maria Elkins was a beerhouse keeper at 1 Beddington Lane. While the 1871 Census records show that William Landsdown was already a publican at the property and in his era it was called the Prince Alfred at 1 Bendon Lane”.
