On the corner with Mayor Street, the Mayor’s Arms first became a pub around 1866 and was demolished in April 1963 to make way for high rise flats. On the 11th November 1875, Patrick O’brien took over the lease of the Mayor’s Arms from George Coombs for the sum of £512 and a yearly rent of £3.15/-. George Coombs, a brewer from Radstock , had taken the lease from a Mr. Charles Sleep on the 16th January 1871 at the yearly rent of £12.15/-. This lease on this house was first taken up by a Mr. William Derrick on the 7th September 1859 at a yearly rent of £12.15/-, the owner of the building was the Bristol City Council and the lease was for 75 years.
