Seven Stars Penn Street

The following was provided by Geoff Bennett: “The Seven Stars was run by my 2x Great Grandmother Elizabeth Hall. The 1881 census for the Seven stars shows her Grandfather John Shorland who ran several Bristol pubs in Temple district. Elizabeth left the business to her son who ran it for some years before moving to the Britannia Newfoundland Road. Elizabeth’s Grandson Frederick Goldsworthy married Hannah Oxenham and they had rooms in the Britannia. Elizabeth’s only daughter Louisa Ann Patten Hall was living in Hannah Loneys guest house Bedminster in 1881 with 2 month old Frederick. Louisa Ann died from consumption when her son was 4. Frederick’s Father married again and had a Daughter Gertrude who became a pianist and accompanied Dame Clara Butt in a Concert at the Colston Hall Bristol. When aged 21 Frederick went to live in the Seven Stars and was left some money in his Grandmothers will (she died in 1911)”

Sedan Chair Broad Quay

In 1860, landlord Frederick Kalkhoven opened a music room at the Sedan Chair, what follows is a passage from a 1979 booklet by Kathleen Barker entitled ‘Early Music Hall In Bristol’

Under Fred Kalkhoven it started with convivials in June 1860; extending its range, in April 1861 Kalkhoven offered selctions from operas which in the previous weeks had been given at the Theatre Royal; the following month “the Evans’s of Bristol” (as he was pleased to nickname his room) housed an African Opera (i.e. black faced minstrel) Troupe; and in August he was busy trying to form a Glee Club. The eccentric Joey Jones, a London comic, held a levee on Boxing Night, when … Aristocratic amateurs, thriving tradesmen, honest artisans, each and all will meet with the warmest of welcomes, every evening at 8. Hail! all Hail! The Era reported the Sedan Chair at this time as “nightly well patronised by the gentry of Bristol and neighbourhood,” but Kalkhoven gave up at the end of 1862 and the inn passed from the records as a singing room.
