On the corner with Little Peter Street. standing in 1606 the Cat & Wheel was re-built in 1900, some bits & pieces were salvaged and are now housed in the Bristol City Museum. The later building was demolished in 1969 for a new museum complex which was never built. If standing today it would be in Castle Park just opposite the entrance to the Galleries car park in Newgate. The name above the door in the older picture is W.T. Beavis which dates it to around the time of the inn’s demolition.

Prior to becoming a pub in the late 1870s this building was home to an eating house and refreshment rooms. Not a very good picture but it shows the pub (left) around 1900 shortly before the street was rebuilt. Bombed in the second world war this is part of the site now occupied by the Galleries shopping centre.

The condition of this tavern was typical of buildings in this area which was cleared in the 1880s and 90s to make way for the Fry‘s chocolate factories. Today it would be at the junction of All Saints’ Street, Fairfax Street and Pithay. The landlord’s name on the sign above the window is John Williams the pub’s last licensee.

The name over the door in this photograph is A. Hancock which dates it to the late 1890s. The building next door is the Cat & Wheel which was re-built around 1900. The Cat & Wheel and the Bear & Rugged Staff were pulled down in 1969 for a museum complex that was never built. Today the pubs would stand in Castle Park opposite the Newgate entrance to the Galleries car park.

Between 1875 and 1885 Wright’s Directory records James Cleaves as publican but the 1881 census shows his wife Elizabeth as the licensee. The tenancy of Howard Herniman commenced on the 20th May 1931, the rent was £60 per annum and the landlord was The Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Limited.
