George Clark, later at the Coach & Horses in Gloucester Lane, was son in law to John Stevens. Born 1813 in Keynsham and first of all a shoemaker, George became one of the first Bristol police force recruits in 1836 and by the time of his first marriage in 1840 had risen to the rank of Sergeant, but must have left the force to become a publican when John Stevens died in 1852. This information was kindly provided by Lee Paltridge of Perth, Western Australia.
